The lodge and a ring of guest cabins adjacent to the working cattle-ranch portion of the operation, are part of what the ranch calls "Fort Boettcher." It isn't and was never a fort, though it looks like a modern version of a frontier outpost. "Boettcher," pronounced BETT-chur, was Charles Boettcher, a wealthy Leadville and Denver, Colorado, businessman who built the cabins as a fishing and hunting camp for his friends and raised draft horses in the pastures for the Denver tram system in the early 20th Century.
