Woodbox Inn, 29 Fair Street, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA
Summary
Significance: The Woodbox Inn was constructed c. 1709 as a residence for the George Bunker family. The structure was originally a story and one half saltbox. An early addition converted the saltbox into a two and one half story half house. The house evolved into a connected double half house through a subsequent addition. The building has been frequently altered over time, first to accommodate the growth of the Bunker family then later, in 1931, as it was converted for use as an inn and restaurant. The structure provides an opportunity to see the changing attitudes towards the preservation issues of adaptive use, recreation of period details and rehabilitation.
