description

Summary

Significance: This house was built in 1851 for Dr. Edward Heard and his new wife. Two carpenters, Heveston and Tinniman, are believed to have constructed it for Sarah Jane Webb Heard, daughter of Amos Webb, for about $3,000. The house is built of native materials, with mostly cypress with a shingle roof. It was built for the daughter and son-in-law of a successful businessman and civic leader. The entire house was constructed with hand shaped lumber rather than machine made material.
