Summary

2014 Leicester B. Holland Prize, Entry
Significance: Built during the late eighteenth century, the Clover Hill farm, English bank barn is located within the Southwest Mountains Rural Historic District in eastern Albemarle County, Virginia. The property was originally part Cloverfields Farm, owned by the Meriwether family who obtained 18,000 acres of land in a grant from King George II in 1730.

Present in a Mutual Assurance Policy dated September 16, 1800, the barn, then part of Cloverfields farm and owned by William D. Meriwether, was valued at 500 dollars, substantial for the period. The policy further describes the size of the barn at 36' x 46' along with three shed roof additions, two of which are present today.

Constructed using heavy timber framing techniques and clad with horizontal weatherboard siding, the three-bay English bank barn displays little exterior ornamentation, However the original interior posts are not only chamfered on all visible sides, but also display a lamb's tongue stop at the top and bottom of each chamfer. Overall the building still retains integrity of both craftsmanship and material despite heavy agricultural use over the past 200 plus years.
