Summary

Significance: The Convent of the Holy Family was erected in 1891 on property purchased by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family, an order of African American nuns. The property was bought in 1881 with the assistance of Thomy Lafon, a African American philanthropist. The original site contained the Orleans Ballroom, which the nuns converted into part of their school after the convent was built. The convent was demolished in 1964.
