Significance: Samuel Neave, prominent Philadelphia merchant, acquired the site of the mansion in 1788 and built about 2 years later, on Neave's death in 1774. The property was bought by Thomas C. Wharton and occupied for years by his kinsman, Owen Jones, another well-known merchant. With it's back buildings, coach house, stable, greenhouse, and garden. It could compete with the other establishments of wealthy businessmen along Second Street,
