Significance: The Stable/Carriage House at The Woodlands is the only extant Hamilton-era outbuilding and is notable for its affinity to the neoclassical architectural expression visible in the estate's mansion-house. Letters indicate that while in England (1784-86) William Hamilton contemplated a new stable for The Woodlands at the same time he considered alterations and enlargements to his house. Given that he likely conferred with English sources regarding the house and grounds, he could have easily discussed the stable and other outbuildings as well.
