Significance: The successor to 7 previous structures serving the same purpose. The old Allegheny U.S. Post Office was erected in 1897. A reflection of the French Renaissance period, interpreted in massive granite. The Post Office was built through the efforts of Thomas M. Bayne and Colonel W.A. Stone of the 51st and 52nd Congresses respectively. A.W. Aiken was supervising architect and L. Leach & Son of Chicago was contractor.
