Human Junk. A product of the mill (See #2963) "Ben workin fer 10 years. Began when I was six years old for 5 cents a day. Lately I was workin $1.25 a day but got to spittin blood and had to quit." A group of berry pickers on the farm of Mr. Giles, Seaford, Del. 3 children are 3 years of age, 3 are 4 years old, 1 is 5 years old, and 1 is 6 years old. During the berry season the families get out into the field at 4 o'clock in the morning, and each child is assigned to 2 rows of berry growth, each 300 yards, long, and when the whistle of the padrone sounds they start picking and generally quit work about 1 P.M. There are days when the work continues until 4 and 5 o'clock in the evening.  Location: Seaford, Delaware.

They bought twenty acres of raw unimproved land with a first payment of fifty dollars which was money saved out of relief budget (August 1936). They received a FSA (Farm Security Administration) loan of seven hundred dollars for stock and equipment. Now they have a one-room shack, seven cows, three sows, and homemade pumping plant, along with ten acres of improved permanent pasture. Cream check approximately thirty dollars a month. Husband also works about ten days a month on odd jobs outside the farm. Husband is twenty-six years old, wife twenty-two. Three small children. Been in California five years. "Piece by piece this place gets put together. One more piece of pipe and our water tank will be finished."

A menace to Society. The Padgett family. The entire family including the mother totally illiterate. No one could read or write. The mother does mill work some. Alice, 17 years has steady job. Makes from $5 to $6 a week. Alfred, 13 years now, worked here when he was 12, and in other mills before that. Makes $4 a week. Recently crippled by getting his hand caught in the cogs of a spinning machine. Richard just reached 11. Been working here 1 year; began when he was 10. Makes $2.40 a week. "The work runs him down too." William, 6 years old, nearly blind. Lizzie, 5 years old. Home in utter neglect; filthy and bare. When investigator called the mother had been gone about an hour, leaving a roomer's 3 months old baby in the cradle before an open fire on the hearth, and only two children 5 and 6 years old - one nearly blind, playing around. All these children five years, six years, seven years, nine years and two a little older, were picking cotton on H.M. Lane's farm Bells, Tex. Only one adult, an aunt was picking. Father was plowing. Edith, five years, (see preceding photo) picks all day. "Hughie" six years old, girl, picks all day. Alton, seven years old, boy, picks fifty pounds a day.
