New 'Mosquito Boat' ready for action. Washington, D.C., June 19. The PT-9, first of the American Motor Torpedo Boats to be delivered to the U.S. Navy under the President's $15,000,000 experimental small craft program had a preview showing for the press today. The 'Mosquito Boat' and eight other ones will be based at the naval operating base, Norfolk, Virginia, where they will undergo service tests under various sea conditions to determine their capabilities and limitations. This is the same type of boat that the government is in the process of releasing to the British Navy. Chairman David L. Walsh of the Senate Naval Affairs Committee expressed indignation over the Navy's action in this respect in view of the fact that this government is trying to build up its own sea power

Officers of the National Woman's Party who will direct the Woman's Liberty Drive which opens on Thanksgiving Day to raise funds to complete the ratification of the federal suffrage amendment. When the drive opens 20 states will have ratified, 19 have already taken favorable action, and a special session has been called in North Dakota for November 25. 16 states are still needed for the adoption of the amendment. These must be secured, according to suffrage leaders, by the first of March in order to enable women of the country to register in the primaries of all states. The Woman's Liberty Drive will be conducted in states which have already ratified the amendment and the funds will be used in campaigns to persuade reluctant governors to call special sessions of their state legislatures. "If special sessions were called a majority in enough of the legislatures is pledged to complete ratification tomorrow," Alice Paul, chairman of the National Woman's Party and Commander-in-Chief of the drive, stated today. It has been many years since these veteran fire engines clanged down the street manned by doughty firefighters, but they are now getting into action in a fight far exceeding anything in their previous long career. Negro Marines prepare for action. Breaking a tradition of 167 years, the U.S. Marine Corps started enlisting Negroes on June 1, 1942. The first class of 1,200 Negro volunteers began their training three months later as members of the 51st Composite Defense Battalion at Montford Point, a section of the 200 square mile Marine Base, Camp Lejeune, at New River, North Carolina. Evidence of the lack of racial friction may be seen in the sports program at the camp. On the baseball team Negro enlistees and white non-com officers are teammates. Camp Lejeune has its own baseball league, with the Montford Point team a strong contender for championship honors

Production of butylene glycol. P. Burke Jacobs checks the milling of corn for which new industrial uses are sought at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Peoria, Illinois. A method for converting corn and other grains into butylene glycol by the action of bacteria, developed in the laboratory, has proven effective on a semi-commercial scale in the pilot plant. This chemical can be used in making anti-freeze for automobiles and in the production of commercial solvents for various manufacturing purposes. Department scientists have succeeded on a laboratory scale in turning butylene glycol into butadiene, from which synthetic rubber can be made. Now they are trying to do it on a semi-commercial scale
