New elevator installed in Washington Monument. A new elevator has been installed in the Washington Monument and the thousands of sightseers to the Capital this summer can be accomodated in their climb to the top of this 555 feet granite shaft. This elevator makes more trips per day. In addition to the new elevator, precautions are being taken to prevent suicides, four having been committeed since the Monument was built. Maryland woman takes skeet shooting title. Westmoreland Hills, MD. Jan. 5. Mrs. Albert F. Walker of this town has been declared 1937 women's skeet shooting champion of the country by the National Skeet Shooting Association. The Association has released the averages on which the ratings were based, but one day last year at the Kenwood, MD, skeet club, Mrs. Walker set the woman's record fall with 99x100 (skeet for 99 birds out of a possible 100). In addition to her national title, she outranks both men and women shooters in the District of Columbia and Maryland, 1/5/38

Agriculture. Guayule cultivation. Seedling topper at work on guayule nursery beds. This machine mows the seedlings off to a uniform height for ease in digging and packing. The tops are collected in a bin on the machine and disposed of outside of the nursery. The tops are worthless for rubber production. Guayule plantings will produce an estimated 600 tons of rubber in early 1943, provide a crop in 1944 which should yield 33,000 tons and a harvest in 1945 to yield 47,000 tons. An annual production of 70,000 tons to 80,000 tons will materialize if full capacity of nurseries now being built is utilized. Addition: This program is part of the Department of Agriculture's Emergency Rubber Project, administered by the Forest Service under congressional authorization "to make available a source of crude rubber for emergency and defense uses"

The first class of 1,200 Negro volunteers began their training three months later as members of the 51st Composite Defense Battalion at Montford Point, a section of the 200-square mile Marine Base, Camp Lejeune, at New River, North Carolina. Among the outstanding Negroes in the original group of Negro Marines is Private First Class Walker Manley, formerly organist of the Christian Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a demonstrator for the Hammond Organ Company, who is now post organist at Camp Lejeune. Guayule plantings will produce an estimated 600 tons of rubber in early 1943, provide a crop in 1944 which should yield 33,000 tons and a harvest in 1945 to yield 47,000 tons. An annual production of 70,000 tons to 80,000 tons will materialize if full capacity of nurseries now being built is utilized. Addition: This program is part of the Department of Agriculture's Emergency Rubber Project, administered by the Forest Service under congressional authorization "to make available a source of crude rubber for emergency and defense uses"
