Send your typewriters to war. At Universal City, California, Maria Montez, glamorous Latin-American movie star, and Gloria Jean, typical of young America in Hollywood, helped collect over one hundred typewriters for the Army, Navy, and Marines. Only machines manufactured since January 1, 1935 were commandeered; no portables were wanted. A telephonic dictation room is being set up whereby busy executives can pick up the telephone, dictate their mail to a centrally located room which insures prompt typing of their letters, and at the same time more correspondence can be handled with lesser number of typewriters

America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. Oil well derricks on the beach along the coast of the U.S. Pacific coast state of California indicate how thorough is the seach for oil which has been going on in America for more than eighty years. Some beach wells are drilled straight down to reach oil deposits, but others are drilled at an angle so that oil is being pumped from locations far under the sea. Sometimes the bottom of the well is a quarter mile or half mile from the shore, while surf washes the foundations of the steel tower on which the drilling or pumping machinery is placed. The thoroughness and efficiency of the U.S. oil industry in finding new oil deposits accounts for the enormous supplies produced in America for the modern machines of war. In 1944 according to a U.S. oil company official, the predictable U.S. crude oil total will reach 1,601,250,000 barrels

America's youth builds and flies model planes on miniature flying fields. Two American boys give their giant model plane a running start at Kelly Field in the city of San Antonio in the southwestern U.S. state of Texas where members of the Gas Model Club do their weekly flying. The plane, which weighs eleven pounds, has a thirteen feet (3.9 meters) wing spread, and a wing area of twenty-four square feet (2.2 square meters) The plane will not take off by itself, but with a running start flies very successfully. When the U.S. government in 1941 called on model plane builders to turn out 800,000 scale model airplanes for use by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, and civilian defense groups to train military and civilian personnel to recognize hostile and friendly aircraft, it was estimated that there were nearly three million American youths actively interested in aero-modeling. These young model builders put their experience to practical use by turning out models of fighters, scouts, fighter bombers, bombers, torpedo carriers, and commercial planes of the United Nations and of the enemy
