If the Bakers' Union Knew. What goes on in Montenegro among the followers of their craft, there would be a great to-do. For after a baker gets done baking, he goes out himself and peddles the bread. Like the picture, the bread is carried on a long board, containing thirty three loaves weighing five pounds each some load. But while the housewives can't complain of the service, the American doctors and nurses who are fighting the American doctors and nurses who are fighting disease in the Balkan country don't like the method. It is unsanitary and many cases of disease have been traced to it, according to the Americans. This custom and many others connected with the food supply, the Americans are trying to correct in aiding Montenegro to get on its feet again

By Permission of Allah. Dr. Marie J. Hyndman, of Philadelphia, at work on an Albanian's teeth in the American Red Cross hospital at Tirana. American doctors attempting to stem the rising tide of disease in Albania found that most all the people had never had any dental attention and that much ill health originated from the condition of their molars. But before the Mohammedan population of the country would consent to have their teeth tinkered with, Dr. Hyndman had to have the local priest issue a statement that dental work would give no offense to Allah

Les Miserables. The lame and the sick waiting outside the American Red Cross dispensary at Niksic for treatment by the American doctors and nurses. The war brought dire want, destitution and suffering to the people of this little Balkan state. Red Cross investigators found fifty percent of the population suffering from some kind of illness. To stem this tide of disease and teach better sanitary standards of living the Red Cross set up various medical stations in the country, in addition to its hospitals, playgrounds, sewing rooms and relief depots

American doctors at work in Serbia. In one of the oldest and quaintest towns in southern Europe, Prizren, Serbia, this American Red Cross doctor is attending to all the surgical work of the population of 100,000 souls. Dr. Lester B. Bradford, of Boothby, Maine, is seen in the relief hospital dressing the wounded feet of a citizen fired upon by bandits. Prizren is in the mountains fifty miles from any railroad. Bandit raids are the rule rather than the exception. As they usually take place at night, only the bravest and most unwary travel after dark. Great suffering has followed in the wake of war in this section of Serbia and the miserable people have almost reached the end of their hope of re-adjusted conditions that will alleviate their hunger and poverty

Two flags Albanians will never forget. Old Glory and the American Red Cross emblem can be seen flying from one end of Albania to the other. They have brought a new idea to this old world country, probably the most primitive in Europe. Wherever those flags are exhibited, the people know they can look for a lightening of their burdens and a helping hand with their troubles. This shows the American Red Cross hospital at Tirana, to which American doctors and nurses go into the surrounding country to care for the sick and ailing. At the extreme right is Dr. Lloyd W. Brooke of Portland, Oreg. Director of the Tirana Hospital

Just a Few Stones and a Vine or Two. That is what constitutes most of the mountain homes in Montenegro. The one shown here is typical. It has no chimney as there is a government tax on them, so the smoke from the open fire must find its way out as best it can. American doctors sent into the country by the Red Cross find that such living conditions lead to chronic eye trouble and consumption. Red Cross workers report that fifty percent of the population is suffering from some sort of disease. This little hut is of particular interest as much as it next to a similar one in which King Nicholas, exiled ruler of the country, was born in the tiny hamlet of Niegosh

"Oh Say, Can You See ?" In every good sized town throughout the Balkans today, and in many of the smaller communities as well, the American flag will be found floating over one or more buildings. It had been carried to these places by the American Red Cross in pushing its program of relief and succor for thousands of destitute and needy peoples. The building over which Old Glory floats in this picture is the American Red Cross dispensary in the far off Montenegro in the town of Podgoritza. Here 150 Montenegrins are treated for illness and injuries everyday, the first medical treatment the majority have had in their life. From here American doctors and nurses journey on mule back into the mountains to give aid to those unable to come to the dispensary. The two Americans in the picture are (left to right) Captain Joseph F. Haros, of Chicago and Lieut. Col. H.F. Fairclough of Leland Standford University, director of the Red Cross Montenegrin Unit

Albanians Wait Curiously For Medical Aid. Awaiting their turn at the Red Cross hospital-clinic in Tirana, Albania the strange people of the Balkin state exhibit a strange fear of what might be in store for them. They are unaccustomed to scientific care of the sick as it is known in the western world so the strange things that are accomplished by American doctors and nurses in alleviation of paid and in actual cures is to them the result of some supernatural influence. The combined efforts of the Junior Red Cross and the American Red Cross are aiming largely at the treatment of sick and neglected children. At present the death toll from tuberculosis and other wasting diseases grow larger every month

Hoss Trading Days Revived. One of the livestock markets in Montenegro during a busy hour. Business is done in true Oriental fashion, the traders letting the prospective purchaser make the first approach. No effort is made to drum up trade it's not the Montenegrin way. A type of the shrines often found beside the water wells of Serbia. Among the superstitious these shrines were a sure protection against contamination-a substitute for what city dwellers in America know as chlorine. The more elaborate the decorations, the purer the water was supposed to be. But American doctors directing the Red Cross Medical Relief campaign judged the water from a chemical standpoint and many of the shrines lost in prestige there by as the A.R.C. men found that disease was rampant in some of the ancient wells

Progress of Balkan Architecture. The typical peasants home in the mountains of Montenegro. It illustrates well the lack of progress that has existed for hundreds of years in this part of Europe. The house is a one-room affair built by the family and consists of loose stones with a grass roof. American doctors and nurses sent to Montenegro by the Red Cross to battle against the increasing epidemics found these living conditions to be one of the chief causes of disease which has fifty percent of the population in its grip
