Birdhouses, including some that may be elaborately carved or painted, are a common sight in the gardens and woods of rural and suburban America. In South Hero, Vermont, an island town in Lake Champlain, separating Vermont and New York State, the houses are somewhat ordinary. They're remarkable because HUNDREDS of them hung from branches all through the woods along West Shore Road. Property owners who joined to create and mount them say they were placed as a mosquito deterrent: swallows that roost in some of them devour the insects

Birdhouses, including some that may be elaborately carved or painted, are a common sight in the gardens and woods of rural and suburban America. In South Hero, Vermont, an island town in Lake Champlain, separating Vermont and New York State, the houses are somewhat ordinary. They're remarkable because HUNDREDS of them hung from branches all through the woods along West Shore Road. Property owners who joined to create and mount them say they were placed as a mosquito deterrent: swallows that roost in some of them devour the insects
