Wants dependant children cared for thru Social Security. Washington, D.C. June 8. Senator James P. Pope, Democrat of Idaho, has introduced a bill in the Senate to increase the Federal Government's contribution, through the Social Security Board, to care of dependent children from third the maintenance cost to one half. At present the government contributes half the cost of old age pensions and aid to the blind. The Pope proposal would bring the law with reference to dependent children in conformity to the provisions relating to other beneficiaries of the act. 6/8/37

"The cheapest thing for the government to do would be to put people like me on enough land to make a living on. You can't tell me anything about running around with the fruit, I know that deal. Premium on Male Babies in Montenegro. Montenegro is a land of "Little Mothers". While the mother toils the field and the father oils his gun for the next war, the oldest sister takes care of the family. This shows one "little mother" outside her mountain home. She is caring for two little sisters. The one in her arms may look like a boy, but she's not. Boys are considered much more valuable than girls in the family, and the care of them is always left to the Grandmother or some older person. Among the superstitious the death of a male child is believed to leave a curse on the family for the balance of its existence. It is such superstitions as these that the American Red Cross has had to overcome in its child welfare work throughout the country. Note the skirts of the children. They are made from a blanket given to the family by the R.C

Several olde[r] boys were hanging around and joining in when they could. Also a mother and babe. I asked Miss Carrington, in charge, where the children from eight to fourteen go, and she said that few of them at those ages care for education. They are just waiting to become old enough to get into the mill. The only available school for them is a long way off. Location: Lynchburg, Virginia.

Agriculture. Women on farms. There's a feminine hand at the controls of many of America's activities these days. Like many other farm wives whose husbands are engaged in war work, Mrs. William Wood manages a 120 acre farm in Colona, Michigan, with little male assistance. With a crop of corn, tomatoes and rasberries to harvest, she still finds time to care for her own Victory garden and to attend a first-aid class. And for the scrap drive Mrs. Wood salvaged 1,600 pounds of outworn metal and rubber articles from the farm, and contributed them to her local collection agency

There'll be a long wait for new stoves, so take care of the one you own. Whether it operates by gas or electricity, coal or wood, hang this motto above it: Keep it Clean. A little soap and warm water will go a long way toward preserving its life and usefulness. If it's encrusted with grease, use steel wool to clean it
