Charles Edison, son of the late inventor, Thomas Edison, was today sworn in as the 46th Secretary of the Navy to succeed the late Secretary Claude A. Swanson. Naval leaders ask Congress for more armament. Washington, D.C., Jan. 8. Photographed today at the initial meeting of the House Naval Affairs Committee are, left to right: Lewis Compton, Assistant to Secretary of the Navy Charles Edison, Secretary Edison, with Admiral Harold R. Stark, Chief of Naval Operations standing in rear. Following a brief statement by Secretary Edison, Admiral Stark urged the Committee to approve a bill by Chairman of the Committee Carl Vinson to give the Navy 25 percent more tonnage, 6,000 more planes at a cost of $1,300,000,000. Without such increase, he said, the U.S. will be 'relatively weak in naval power at the end of the year'
