The carrousel plant in which they work is now engaged in producing war parts on subcontracts from army and navy contractors. These skilled hands belong to sixty-five-year-old Herman Jagow, whose wood carving skill delighted thousands of children riding the horses of merry-go-rounds. First Chinese seamen granted shore leave in wartime America. Chinese seamen on United Nations' vessels may now obtain shore leave in American ports. Heretofore, because of the large number of desertions by Chinese crew members, alien seamen of Chinese nationality have been detained on board when their ships touched American ports. As a result of conferences between representatives of the Chinese Embassy, the Recruitment and Manning Organization of War Shipping Administration, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Department of Justice, Chinese seamen may now be granted shore leave if guarantees are given that they will not desert. Hooks for export packing cases of aircraft engines are bent on this horizontal bulldozer which was formerly used to bend rails for merry-go-rounds to delight the hearts of carefree children. It was thought impossible to convert the machine for this use, but a little thinking and ingenuity solved the problem. The slack was taken out of the bulldozer and it was found to work quite satisfactory as an aid to bending the heavy hooks into shape. Spillman Engineering Company, North Tonawanda, New York

With one hundred percent conversion of this automobile factory to production of airplane engines, the gigantic task of remodelling old machinery, removal of old and installation of new equipment, and extensive rebuilding of the plant itself was formidable--but speedy. Under terms of its contract, production was not scheduled until October, but Herulean efforts of management and labor reduced this to early spring of this year.
