Rubber reclamation. Reclaiming rubber from scrap tires. An attendant at a large Midwest xylos process plant checks temperature on a continuous belt dryer which removes every trace of water. Recovery of rubber from old casings is based on dissolving and washing away all tire fibers and processing the resultant rubber material. Firestone

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. Before completion of the fourth and final welding operation in the manufacture of shatterproof oxygen cylinders for high altitude flying, all straps are subjected to physical tests to determine the strength of the weld. Occasional radiographic inspections are made to insure the quality of workmanship after the two halves of the cylinder are brought together in this atomic welding machine and made one unit. Here, the operator has just completed the union and is about to remove the whole cylinder. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Rubber reclamation. Rubber sheets from scrap tires. Reclaimed rubber, with all traces of metal and fiber removed, is passed through a series of mill rolls and taken off in sheets form the final roll. This rubber, reclaimed by the xylos process, is now ready for processing into thousands of mechanical rubber products vital to the war production effort. It is also put to many uses in which reclaimed stock is more desirable than new rubber. Firestone

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. The first step in the manufacture of high-altitude-flying shatterproof oxygen cylinders in the metal department of a large rubber factory is the forming or stamping of the shell. Stainless steel sheets are blanked or cut into discs(left foreground). Before stamping, these discs are drawn through rolls where a drawing compound is added to both sides to facilitate the forming of the shell. The 750-ton toggle press, shown above, forms a half cylinder in one powerful stroke. Once the half cylinder is formed, it is trimmed and the value-fitting hole is punched into the spherical dome. A cleaning operation later removes the drawing compound. The cylinder halves are now ready for the various welding operations. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Sealing and shaping the bead. Each new bead must be sealed into position by this forming tool as well as by use of the solvent-cement compound. Every tire built is the personal achievement of the expert tire builder. Building a larger size truck tire often consumes a full day's work! Firestone (General Tires), Akron, Ohio

Wrapping in cloth prevents sticking. Reels of fabric may be stored for a few moments or a few days, wrapped in cloth to prevent it from sticking to itself when rolled up. These reels are brought from storage to machines such as this, in which the fabric is out on a powered bias cutter to exact length for one ply of a tire. This worker is making a layer of two plies, with the cords running at right angles, one laid on top of the other. This layer will later be used by a tire builder in building up the plies of his tire to the required number. Firestone (General Tires), Akron, Ohio

Rubber reclamation. Rubber "spaghetti" from old tires. In the xylos process of reclaiming scrap in a Midwest plant, rubber is forced through a screen by a large worn screw, and bits of metal and fiber are removed. Ropy lengths of rubber, ready for the final refining operation, are extruded. Firestone

Shaping the sidewall. Moistening the bead area with a special rubber solvent and cement, the tire builder makes ready to force the overhanging edges down and around to the bead where it will first be anchored, then trimmed. The wheel spins and stops by foot control, leaving both hands free for work upon the tire itself. Firestone (General Tires), Akron, Ohio

Rubber reclamation. Scrap tires mobilized for Victory. Millions of discarded casings cover more than 100 acres at one Midwest recovery plant. Systematic piling and sectional arrangement reduce fire hazard. Special processes will separate metal from the tires and tube bodies. The reclaimed material will be used to manufacture thousands of essential mechanical rubber products. Firestone

Feeding cord to the fabric machine. Cords feed down through the floor to the calendaring machine two stories below. As may be seen from this picture, the cords are gathered in four banks at this point, but join together in a solid mass by the time they reach the rubber-impregnating calendaring machine. Another set of four banks of cords also issue from the creel room carrying heavier weight cord stock for truck tire use. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Marking point for the valve stem. These tires are so perfectly balanced that the weight of the valve stem is allowed and provided for. This woman attaches a label to the tire at the point where the valve stem should be placed. Balancing a tire was once considered unneccessary, until it was demonstrated that out-of-balance tires cause wheel shimmy, excessive wear and many other tire evils. Rubber reclamation. Producing reclaimed rubber. Rubber scrap, obtained by dissolving and washing away all fibrous materials, passes through a steaming operation. It will then go through the drying, refining and other xylos processes at a big Midwest plant that is recovering large quantities for war essentials. Firestone

Giant tire manufacturer. Giant vulcanizer used in the vulcanization of bullet-sealing gasoline tanks, eight-foot high bomber tires and huge 3,600-pound earth mover tires. This unit at a large Eastern tire plant is the largest of its kind in the world. It must be thoroughly and constantly inspected as it is in frequent service on war production. Here the inspector is checking the steam and pressure fittings. The mold, when open, stands more than two-and-a-half stories high and weighs over 300,000 pounds. Firestone

Seating the valve and seaming the tube. After each tube is snipped off at the proper length, it passes to this worker who places the open and over a sleeve, and forces the valve into position right in the center of reinforcing patch. This makes doubly sure that the tube is absolutely leak-proof. When this is done, the cube can be seamed shut--the operation which is taking place here. The two ends are butted together, the sticky rubber is bonded together under pressure, and passed on to the curing molds for vulcanizing. Firestone (General), Akron, Ohio
