U.S. forces establish bases in Liberia. Members of the U.S. Army Engineers Corps stationed in Liberia set out in a tropical drizzle to begin their day's work. Chiefly composed of Negro units, the U.S. forces are stationed in the African Negro Republic at the suggestion of the Liberian government which requested assistance in guaranteeing its security and independence. Liberia was originally founded in 1821 by Negro freedman under American auspices.
