Waste paper. Destined for destruction, this household rubbish heap contains waste paper so badly needed today for conversion into the paper packing in which defense and lend-lease goods are shipped. Paper is one of the materials with which Americans have been most profligate, only now they are beginning to conserve paper along with many other materials long thought of as merely refuse

De Land pool. Bits and parts. Casey's machine shop, a unit of the De Land, Florida industrial pool, couldn't make a certain washer fast enough for the contract. So F.W. Casey took parts from a junk heap and built the speed press pictured above. Now it sits in the yard, because of insufficient room in the little shop, and turns out eight washers a minute for the war machine. Operating it is young Norman Bane, who was an automobile mechanic up until six months ago, when he apprenticed as a machinist under Casey

De Land pool. Bits and parts. Faced with the problem of doubling production speed on a certain type of washer needed for the De Land, Florida pool aircraft contract, F.W. Casey went to his scrap heap. He took a two-cylinder gas engine from a spray machine used in an orange grove, a pump from the hydraulic lift of a dump truck, another pump from a steam engine cylinder, and built his hydraulic speed press. Too big for his little machine shop, the machine was set up in the yard, where it produces eight parts a minute for the war machine. Operating it is Norman Bane, Casey's one-man crew

Family of B. F. Clark, 219 N. 4th Street. This family has worked in 8 different mill villages in the past five years. Clark was a prosperous farmer, before that, but his farm ran down. He says mill families get the habit of moving from place to place. "And mills are writing all the time, giving great inducements and trying to fool you too." Some of the families around here have moved much more than we have. Moving eats up a heap of money." The father and all in group except mother and baby are in the mill. Home bare and ill-kept. A corner of the prison yard at the Kharkov Institution. This prison was used to hold the victims which Bolshevik Court condemned to death in wholesale fashion. The heap of litter in the corner is full of ghastly fragments of bone, mute but eloquent testimony of the horrid scenes that have taken place in this compound. The stains on the wall, and lower stains now covered by the heap of refuse were made by the daily executions in which the condemned stood in a line, hands tied behind their backs and facing the tow of soldiers, to be shot. This photograph was taken by the American Red Cross personnel, who for purposes of Distributing medical supplies, was attached to the Units of the Volunteer Army

When he needs a new machine, most of the parts come from this junk heap. On a recent contract handled by the De Land pool, he couldn't get steel for a certain die.
