Noon hour at Massachusetts Mill, Lindale, Ga. During the days following this, I proved the ages of nearly a dozen of these children, by gaining access to Family Records, Life Insurance papers, and through conversations with the children and parents, and found those that I could prove to be working now, or during the past year at 10 and 11 years of age, some of them having begun before they were ten. Further search would reveal more. (See Hine Report). Location: Lindale, Georgia.

The boy in the middle, Buford Fox who has been working in the Merrimack Mills for one year said he was twelve years old, but School Record says ten years. Sanford Franklin, boy on the left has been working four months, and I could not prove his age. Merrimack Mfg. Co. See also Hine report. Location: Huntsville, Alabama.

The lessons begin at 6 A.M. and last for six hours, and these children who attend in the morning go into the mill in the afternoon and vice versa for the required eight weeks, which the law specifies. Sulak family, frugal Bohemian farmers own an eighty acre farm near West. Will raise twenty bales of cotton this year. These are all members of family. The five year old picks cotton some. The seven year old picks one hundred pounds a day. The nine year old picks about a hundred pounds. The eleven year old two hundred pounds, thirteen year old two hundred and fifty pounds. The adults pick three or four hundred a day. Note the care they take of the children and of the home. (It was the end of a week and a sort of holiday, but the whole situation shows how much better standard the farm owners keep than do the "renters". See Hine report. Contrast with this photo some of those of the "renters."[)]. Location: West, Texas.

Flossie Britt, 6 years old has been working several months steadily as spinner in the Lumberton Cotton Mills. Makes 30 cents a day. Lonnie Britt, 7 years old has been working steadily for 1 year as spinner. Makes 40 cents a day. Ages and data given me by their grandmother at home, and I saw them going and coming early and late. 2 smallest in group. When Mr. Swift made his last visit to Lumberton he was shown through these mills by Mr. Jennings, who asked Mr. Swift how many children he thought there were under age. Mr. Swift said about 20, Mr. Jennings told him there were at least 30, and called one of his men to prove he was right. He told Mr. Swift that all the mills were employing children under age. N.B. SEE OTHER SIDE BEFORE USING LABEL (over) Important. [verso of card]: N.B. April 1915: A subsequent visit to this family brought out the information that Flossie was 8 years old and Lonnie 10 years old when I saw them. That the boss asked the mother to bring Lonnie to work, and that she worked about 1/2 year as steadily as she could. That another boss asked the mother to bring Flossie to work and that the girl soon became sick. The mother became disgusted and quit the mill for life on her father's farm where they are now located. There was no need for the children working. Since they moved to the farm the superintendent and 2 other persons visited the family and tried to intimidate them and get them to make mis-statements about the children's ages and work. See Hine report for additional details, all given to Mr. Hine in the presence of a prominent Lumberton attorney. Location: Lumberton, North Carolina.
