Conversion. Merry-go-round plant. Hooks for export packing cases of aircraft engines are bent on this horizontal bulldozer which was formerly used to bend rails for merry-go-rounds to delight the hearts of carefree children. It was thought impossible to convert the machine for this use, but a little thinking and ingenuity solved the problem. The slack was taken out of the bulldozer and it was found to work quite satisfactory as an aid to bending the heavy hooks into shape. Spillman Engineering Company, North Tonawanda, New York

The carrousel plant in which they work is now engaged in producing war parts in subcontracts from army and navy contractors. Here the hands, which belong to Otto Andre, are bending crate hooks for the packing of airplane engines for export. The bulldozer was used in peacetime work, has since been converted to war work. Lititz, Pennsylvania. Chester W. Woolworth, president of the Animal Trap Company, had foresight enough to scour the country for screw machines before a single war order came in, and founded the local Lancaster County Office of Price Management. He raised 20,000 dollars for the Republican Party. Before orders for bullets came in from the British Purchasing Commission, the factory turned out army cots, and coat hooks. He was inspired by the York plan for sub-contracting to small machine shops
