Production. Aircraft. Here's one good reason why refrigerator freezing trays and other aluminum gadgets are out for the duration. On trays in the background are hundreds of aluminum castings going into Lockheed bombers and fighters. Every prime casting is "explored" in a huge X-ray camera like the one seen here. It was workers such as these Chinese peasants who finally seem to have convinced the Janpaese that aerial bombing alone will never halt traffic over the Bruma Road. As soon as a bomb falls, or as soon as a cloudburst washes out a section of this miraculous road, hundreds of Chinese peasants are somehow immediately on hand to repair the damage and keep the vital supplies moving on to the Chinese armies and guerrilla forces, which have been bearing the weight of the fight against fascism for years longer than any European nation

Howard Hughes speaking before the Press Club. Washington, D.C., July 21. Howard Hughes, speaking at the National Press Club today, before hundreds of government officials and representatives of foreign governments. Hughes today envisioned a future in aviation when giant flying boats, almost as large as modern ocean liners, will fly the Atlantic under conditions in which the element of luck will play no part, speaking at the luncheon in his honor, he described in detail the type of flying craft and equipment he believes the future will see but which is now nothing more than an aeronautical engineers dream, 7/21/38

A shanty built of refuse near the Sunnyside slack pile, Herrin, Illinois Many residences in southern Illinois coal towns were built with money borrowed from building and loan associations. During the depression building and loan associations almost all went into receivership. Their mortgages were sold for whatever they would bring, and the purchasers demolished houses by the hundreds in order to salvage the scrap lumber. The result is a serious overcrowding and high rents in all the coal towns. A number of people can find no houses to rent, and are living in tents and shanties on the fringes of the town
