Saturday night, September 26, 1914, he took investigator through the old Red Light on Ave. A, pointed out the various resorts, told him about the inmates he has known there. Only a half dozen of them were open now, and those very quietly. Durward has put in 2 years in the messenger work and shows the result of temptations open to him. He has recently returned from a hobo trip through 25 states. He was not inclined to tell much about the shady side of messenger work, but one could easily see that he has been through much that he might have avoided in a profitable kind of work. 18 years old. This structure is fairly typical of the kind of accomodations provided for the recreation of unmarried TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) construction employees of both sexes. Whenever possible such structures are later converted to fill permanent needs of the region. During the construction of Norris Dam, the structure included a large lounge, a refreshment and lunch space, and auditorium with stage and projection room, capable of accomodating 300, library and reading room, barber and beauty shop, restrooms, administrative office and committee or lecture rooms. The auditorium was converted into a gymnasium. It now serves as a community building for the permanent residents of the town of Norris, a regular restaurant having replaced the refreshment room, while the county art center has been installed in place of the library, and the offices, display room, and storage room of the handicraft cooperative have taken up the space formerly occupied by the barber and beauty shop

Sanford Cotton Mill. Accident case. Carl Thornburg a 12 year old boy who went to work at 11. A few weeks ago he caught his arm in the "lapper" machine, and broke it in 2 places. He said: "I sure didn't mean to. Was jus goin through the lapper room an fust thing I knew everything went black." The family is hard-up. Father is a paralytic. Here is a real chance for a mill to do a benevolent deed by making some recompense to this crippled boy and his paralytic father. They think it's charity to give a boy work under legal age, but when he is injured they forget that side of it. No suggestion of any kind of recompense has been heard. Jim Browning said he was 12 years old, but that is doubtful. Has worked 6 months here; gets 50 cents a day. Is in the 2nd grade at school.  Location: Sanford, North Carolina.

Secretary Wallace boosts president's suggestion for rural security loans. Washington, D.C., July 12. Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace told the Senate Banking and Currency Committee today that the president's suggestion for loans totaling $600,000,000 for rural security projects is prudent and economic policy. He said there are 42,000 new tenant farmers each year, and 'if we continue to refuse aid to these needy families, many of them will inevitably drift in to the cities in an effort to get some kind of help there. The cost of supporting them on relief obviously will [be far greater than] the sum necessary to help them [get a new start on the land']
