Dams under construction. Kentucky Dam, close to the mouth of the Tennessee River, will be one of the biggest projects of the Authority and will back the water up for a distance of 185 miles. It will be completed in 1944. This photograph shows a partial view of the lock operation building, with the commanding officer's work space, shaped somewhat like a control cabin in the foreground on the second floor. The near wing contains visitors' rest rooms while the lock switchboard is in the far wing, entered through the door in the foreground of the picture. Visitors are admitted to the various roof levels to watch the locking operation

Sacramento Pit copper mine at Bisbee, Arizona. This is a pit 435 feet deep. In 1911 a shaft was sunk into the slopes of the east wall. In 1917 a dynamite charge blew off the top rock of the crown and dredges were worked to excavate the pit's ore bodies. By 1931 the pit floor was too narrow for dredges to work in. The ore was taken out by caving in the walls into the lower mine levels. Between 1917 and 1931 the mine, which covers thity-five acres, yielded 20,843,667 tons of ore. The mine is today abandoned. Research workers at the Golden, Colorado field station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines at a fifty-pound coke oven, which is used to determine if an unknown coal has coking properties. Coal is tested at various temperature levels to determine its adaptability to coking. Left to right: Ralph Maugham, labor foreman; William Landers, assistant chemical engineer; V.F. Parry, supervising engineer. Mr. Landers is shown using an instrument which measures temperature by the color of the heated mass. The bureau is carrying on a project to determine the suitability of western coal for coke operations with the view to supplying war needs of the expanding iron and steel industry of the Western states
