Packing sardines in Seacoast Canning Co., Factory #7, Eastport, Me. The Boss would not let nine year old Minnie pose, although she works with her mother, packing even far into the night. (See #2439.)  Location: Eastport, Maine.
Mortaria family, 8 Downing St., N.Y., making flowers wreaths. The Little three-year-old on left was actually helping, putting the center of the flower into the petal, and the family said she often works irregularly until 8:00 P.M. The other children, 9, 11, and 14 yrs. old work much later (until 10:00 P.M.) The oldest girl told me her father is a soap-maker and has been making $3.00 a day steady for three years. 5 P.M. Making dolls legs for Campbell Kids. Cattena family, 71 Sullivan St., 5[th] floor front. As soon as the photo was taken, Rose carried the box full of finished legs to the Aetna Doll and Toy Co, (whose name was on the box). Tessie, (on the right) lives down stairs and does this work there. Was helping here. Rose is 14 yrs. old. Lena, (deformed), is 12, Nettie, 9 yrs. old is very deft. 6 P.M. Making hair-brushes. Hausner family, 310 E. 71 St., N.Y. Frank is 6 yrs old. and John is 12. The mother had a sore throat and wore a great rag rapped around it, but she took it off for the photo. They said they all (including the 6 yr old) worked until 10 P.M. when busy. Their neighbor corroborated this. She said, "It's a whole lot better for the boys than doin' nothin'." The mother said the night work hurts their eyes and John said so too. Night Work! Group of boys, all working in Massey Hosiery Mills, Columbus, Ga. Most of them had been working all day and had an hour for supper and were going back into the mill (6:00 P.M.) to work until 8 P.M. as they have done several nights this week and for some time past. I found 4 ten year olds and several of 11 and 12 working in the evenin[g] after supper and they said it was a regular thing. Ferrell [i.e., Terrell?] Butler, 10 yrs old, 1114 21st St., been working off and on 1 yr. Marvin Williams, 11 yrs. old been working 1 yr. part of the time at night. Lawrence Webb, 12 yrs. Old.
