Brazilian Ambassador tries hand at cranking "Lizzie." Washington, D.C., Oct. 29. After hearing the experiences and hardships of the three Brazilian engineers, who finally arrived in the Capital today after a nine-year motor journey from Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian Ambassador Oswaldo Aranha tried his hand at cranking one of the original "flivvers" which survived the arduous trip. Traveling 15,000 miles through 14 countries, the expedition was made in the interest of an international highway between North and South America. In the photograph, left to right: Dr. Leo S. Rowe, Director General of the Pan American Union; Ambassador Aranha Francisco de La Cruz, observer; Leonidas Burges de Oliveira, commander; and Mario Fava, mechanic. 10/29/37

Mr. John Oiveira, a dairy farmer near San Leandro, California. His parents were born in Portugal but he and his son, Mr. A.J. Oliveira, who is cashier of First National Bank of San Leandro, were born in the United States. The Portuguese people have become important in the dairying business throughout the entire state of California and now control at least seventy percent of the dairy business of the state. Mr. Oliveira milks about seventy cows daily. "Our favorite stories when I was a child were those which my father and mother told us about their homeland of Portugal. My wife and I have had a good life in the U.S. and we are proud to see our son an honored man of the community. All of us, we are as American as fried chicken now."
