Largest open pit copper mine in the world at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Copper was discovered here by an officer of the Spanish army in 1800 who sold the same to a wealthy Spanish merchant. Pure native copper was transported by pack mule to Mexico City to enter the royal mint for coinage. In 1900 a young mining engineer became interested in the development and was instrumental in the ultimate success of the Chino Copper Company. The ore is now shipped to Hurley, a short distance to the south, where it is put through a five million dollar smelter

Dr. E. Francis Warren, of Harvard U., believes he will be able to "shoot down" the heaviest clouds and fog by his new invention demonstrated recently at Bolling Field, Wash., by Army fliers. The process uses sand and he states that if enough airplanes are equipped with this device, it will not only be possible to break up clouds and cause rainbut to remove fogs from over both cities and harbors. The picture shows Lt. W. E. Melville pouring sand into the pit. Directly underneath the wing can be seen a nozzle that sprays the sand through the air

Underground at Old Ben number eight mine. These men are on a "man-trip" which goes three and half miles to the face of the coal. General caption: Most of the giant coal producers in Franklin Couny have completely mechanized underground operations. Old Ben number eight, because of shortage of working capital, has not been able to install loading machines to handle the entire output of the mine. Accordingly, the mine still uses the now obsolete pit car loader, and even employs a few hand loaders alongside modern, highly efficient automatic loading machines

Ten to twelve men are housed and fed in this shack, which was built by the group who occupy same. Name of shack is Texas Long Horns. Entire gang is from Texas. Mr. M.A. Pevot of Mauriceville near Beaumont took most of the initiative as well as doing the cooking. He owns a small grocery store in his home town which is cared for in his absence by his wife, mother and father. Three of the trucks, which are very old, belong to him, and he rents them to his associates. Most of the trucks on this job were owned or rented by the worker.
