Abandoned tenant house seen across tractored fields. Hall County, Texas. Many tenants who have filled the land on the family-farm basis are made landless, forced by the machine into the towns, or reduced to day labor on the farms. Large numbers who have gone to the towns have fallen on relief, or even have sought refuge in distant parts. Not only is their security gone, but the opportunity even to rise to ownership is diminished, for profitable operation of mechanized farms requires more land and more capital equipment per farm

Government cartographer develops new process for making relief maps. Washington, D.C., Jan. 13. Through a process just perfected by John Braund, Cartographer for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, relief maps can now be made showing all the details of topography in a form true to nature and which can be quickly understood and accurately read by even the untrained map reader. Instead of compressed paper or cardboard, Braund uses thin metal on which he has printed the map desired. He then hammers out the typography with a special electric hammer he has designed. Braund says this new method has proved more speedier, efficient, and costs less to make than maps, 1/13/39

Uncle Sam spending $3,000,000 to make one map. Washington D.C. July 28. A huge photographic map which when completed will have cost $3,000,000, is being put together by the Agriculture Adjustment Administration, Department of Agriculture, in Washington. Approximately one-thrid of the entire land surface of the United States is being photographed from the air from a distance of three to five miles up. The idea behind this gigantic job is to determine compliance in the Agricultural Conservation Program, plan soil conservation or Public Works projects, lay out roads, forests and public parks, drainage ditches, dams and lakes and also to seek to improve National Defense. (1) C.E. Kowalczyk, AAA worker, is shown making a stereoscopic examination of the finished photographic prints to determine the relief or elevation of land surface. 7/28/37
