Group outside Pittman Handle Factory. A fifteen year old boy operating a dangerous boring machine at which he said a boy recently bored half his hand off. To operate this machine (which bores a large hole in the spade handle) the boy has to throw his whole weight onto the lever which pushes the handle (and himself) up against the unprotected borer. A slip might easily result fatally. Boy earns $1.65 a day. This factory has a number of unprotected belts and dangerous machines. One other boy, about the age of this one, was doing all kind[s] of work, taking away the handles from a huge rip saw, etc., and constantly exposed to danger. Pittman Handle Factory, Denison, Tex. Denounces Black-Connery bill. Washington, D.C. June 9. The pending Black-Connery Wage and Hour Bill was bitterly denounced today by Harvey Willson, Manager of the National Upholstery and Drapery Textile Association, when he appeared before the House and Senate Labor Committee. Pictureing the bill as a long step towrd complete governemtn control of industry and labor such as exists in European countries, Willson expressed the opinion that it would wholly unworkable as a law and would only result in confusions in industry far exceeding that connected with the attempt to administer the late NRA. 6/9/37

First Chinese seamen granted shore leave in wartime America. Chinese seamen on United Nations' vessels may now obtain shore leave in American ports. Heretofore, because of the large number of desertions by Chinese crew members, alien seamen of Chinese nationality have been detained on board when their ships touched American ports. As a result of conferences between representatives of the Chinese Embassy, the Recruitment and Manning Organization of War Shipping Administration, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Department of Justice, Chinese seamen may now be granted shore leave if guarantees are given that they will not desert. Lee Ah Ding (left), engine crew member of a British vessel, and Yee Chee Ching, seaman, start down the gangway to visit New York after their officer (rear) told them they might go ashore. Previously, terms of the new agreement were explained to them, and customs and other formalities were straightened out

A poster comes to life. The middle man in the poster looks at his image mounted on a wall at Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Corporation, wonders what the other two fellows are like, and where they are these days. George Woolslayer, thirty-two-year-old welder, was chosen as a model for this poster when an Office of War Information photographer visited the plant in the fall of 1941. His interest in the soldier and sailor prompted him to write OWI (Office of War Information) asking for information on the servicemen. Result: furloughs wer obtained for the two, who came to the steel mill and saw that "Men Working Together" is the formula by which American soldiers, sailors and workers will win this war. Where Carmen Sylva lived. The Palace of the late Carmen Sylva, celebrated Queen of Roumania, in the Carpathian mountains. It was her favorite retreat. The people of the district depended much on her philanthropy and kindness. The American Red Cross found many of them in a destitute condition as a result of the war. As a result of the Red Cross aid they have placed Americans in the same reverance with which they hold their late Queen

League of Nation Malaria Investigation Committee, Punjab, India. A typical "tank" in a village, showing water buffalos who spend most of the sunshine hours here as there is no nearby mud wallow. There "tanks" are used by water buffalos, because these animals, lacking sweat glands, could not otherwise stand the noonday heat. The result is a high malaria rate in the village

East meets West. Left to right: Coast Guardsman Vincent Pope, Bronx, New York; Coast Guardsman George Gilpin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Lee Ah Ding and Yee Chee Ching, Chinese seamen from a British freighter, meet at South Ferry, New York City. Lee and Yee are two of the first Chinese granted shore leave in an American port since this country entered the war
