"Pan" of gold. Not all of the shiny particles are gold but include mica and a few particles of quicksilver. The gold usually appears in the pan as a minute shiny upper rim of the dirt in the pan. Pinos Altos, New Mexico
Tank manufacture (Chrysler). Traveling overhead hoists are used throughout the huge Chrysler tank arsenal in Detroit, for moving heavy castings from one production operation to another. These workers are removing the rotor casing for a 75 mm gun turret from a machine which grinds the outside rim. The twenty-eight ton "medium" tanks M-3s produced here carry 75 mm field guns and 37 mm anti-aircraft guns as well as several machine guns and other small arms

Making the wire beads. Beads which reinforce the tire and hold it firmly on the rim, are made of the highest grade piano wire, and are extremely tough and durable. They must be made to precisely the correct length, and are foiled on the machine illustrated here. Care must be taken that there are no burrs, slivers or rough spots which might cut into the bead wrapping or fabric. General Tires, Akron, Ohio

Tire recapping. "Cooking" a recapped passenger car tire in a curing mold. The recap is made by applying passenger type reclaimed camelback to a worn casing on which the tread surface had previously been ground down evenly. The plan to recap passenger tires with reclaimed rubber camelback, approved by rubber director William M. Jeffers, was put into effect in February 1943 to reduce the demand for replacement tires and still keep civilian cars in service
