The Raleigh Tavern, erected prior to 1742. This large frame building was the outstanding tavern of its day. Here the Burgesses met; royal governors dined; and the Phi Beta Kappa Society is said to have been founded. The tavern was destroyed by fire in 1859 and reconstructed on original foundations in 1930
