Production of butylene glycol. P. Burke Jacobs checks the milling of corn for which new industrial uses are sought at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Peoria, Illinois. A method for converting corn and other grains into butylene glycol by the action of bacteria, developed in the laboratory, has proven effective on a semi-commercial scale in the pilot plant. This chemical can be used in making anti-freeze for automobiles and in the production of commercial solvents for various manufacturing purposes. Department scientists have succeeded on a laboratory scale in turning butylene glycol into butadiene, from which synthetic rubber can be made. Now they are trying to do it on a semi-commercial scale

America's youth builds and flies model planes on miniature flying fields. Two American boys give their giant model plane a running start at Kelly Field in the city of San Antonio in the southwestern U.S. state of Texas where members of the Gas Model Club do their weekly flying. The plane, which weighs eleven pounds, has a thirteen feet (3.9 meters) wing spread, and a wing area of twenty-four square feet (2.2 square meters) The plane will not take off by itself, but with a running start flies very successfully. When the U.S. government in 1941 called on model plane builders to turn out 800,000 scale model airplanes for use by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, and civilian defense groups to train military and civilian personnel to recognize hostile and friendly aircraft, it was estimated that there were nearly three million American youths actively interested in aero-modeling. These young model builders put their experience to practical use by turning out models of fighters, scouts, fighter bombers, bombers, torpedo carriers, and commercial planes of the United Nations and of the enemy

Two young members of the San Antonio Gas Model Club display the model planes they have designed and constructed in home workshops and brought to Kelly Field in the City of San Antonio in the southwestern U.S. state of Texas for trial flights. Making model planes is a popular hobby among American boys, who recently turned out 800,000 scale model planes for use by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, and civilian defense groups in training personnel to recognize hostile and friendly aircraft. Many U.S. high schools have recently added courses in aeronautics to their curricula

Salinas Valley, California. Large scale, commercial agriculture. This single California County (Monterey) shipped 20,096 carlots of lettuce in 1934, or forty-five percent of all carlot shipments in the United States. In the same year 73.8 percent of all United States carlot shipments were made from Monterey County, Imperial Valley, California (7,797 carlots) and Maricopa County, Arizona (4,697). Production of lettuce is largely in the hands of a comparatively small number of grower-shippers, many of whom operate in two or all three of these counties. Labor is principally Mexican and Filipino in the fields, and white American in the packing sheds. Many workers follow the harvests from one valley to the other, since plantings are staggered to maintain a fairly even flow of lettuce to the Eastern market throughout the year

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Pickling lengths of copper water tube in a brass and copper mill. After annealing, or softening by heat to reduce brittleness and allow further drawing, tubes are "pickled" in a sulphuric acid solution to remove oxide and scale that result from the anneal. Bundles of the tubes are picked up by electric cranes and transported from the pickle to a rinse bath of water. The tubes are then returned to the drawbench for re-drawing down to smaller diameters. Production of butylene glycol. Dr. Lynferd J. Wickerham selects the bacteria that will convert corn into butylene glycol at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Peoria, Illinois. This is one step in the research that led to the development of a fermentation process for converting corn into butylene glycol, which has proved successful on a semi-commercial scale. Butylene glycol, hitherto a relatively rare chemical, can be used in making anti-freeze for automobiles and in the production of commercial solvents for various purposes. In the laboratory, the scientists have succeeded in turning butylene glycol into butadiene, from which synthetic rubber can be made. The next step is to find a way to carry out this process on a larger scale
