DAVID FRANKLIN HOUSTIN [sic], CHAIRMAN OF THE N.C.L.C. Mr. Houston was secretary of Agriculture in President Wilson's Cabinet, 1913-1920 and Sec. of the treasury 1920, 1921. He has been active in educational affairs throughout his life and in the promotion of social welfare generally. He has been a teacher and school Supt., a college professor in political and social science; president of the Agri. and Mechanical College of Texas; dean and later president of the University of Texas; Chancellor of Washington University; chairman of the Federal Board for Vocational Education; chairman of the Farm Loan Board; member of numerous official commissions; and a writer of force and distinction on historical, economic and financial topics. He was born in Monroe, Union Co., N.C. in 1866, received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from South Carolina College, and Master of Arts from Harvard. The degree of Doctor of Laws has been conferred upon him by seven different colleges and Universities, including Harvard, Yale and the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Houston says he looks upon his work with the National Child Labor Committee as presenting a great opportunity. It is the same opportunity that is shared by every member of the organization. Harry McShane - 134 B'way [I,e, Broadway] -Cin. O. - 16 yrs. of age on June 29, 1908. Had his left arm pulled off near shoulder, and right leg broken through kneecap, by being caught on belt of a machine in Spring factory in May 1908. Had been working in factory more than 2 yrs. Was on his feet for first time after the accident, the day this photo was taken. No attention was paid by employers to the boy either at hospital or home according to statement of boy's father. Evidence displayed to Senate Committee. Washington, D.C., April 27. A bloody bullet-torn undershirt was displayed to the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today by Thomas Ferguson, coal miner union Representative, to suport his story of having been shot last January by Harland County deputy sheriffs. He admitted that he could not identify the group of deputies who fired the shots, one of which was soft-nosed bullet that entered his shoulder and came out in the back. The Committee is investigating labor practices in "Bloody" Harlan County, Ky., coal regions, 4/27/1937

Harry McShane - 134 B'way [I,e, Broadway] -Cin. O. - 16 yrs. of age on June 29, 1908. Had his left arm pulled off near shoulder, and right leg broken through kneecap, by being caught on belt of a machine in Spring factory in May 1908. Had been working in factory more than 2 yrs. Was on his feet for first time after the accident, the day this photo was taken. No attention was paid by employers to the boy either at hospital or home according to statement of boy's father. No com- pensation.  Location: Cincinnati, Ohio.

Comparison of Ages. Some of the youngest workers in Roanoke (Virginia) Cotton Mills. On right-hand end is seven year old Frank, a helper. Next to him is twelve year old Ronald, a doffer. On his right is Mamie Witt, twelve year old spinner. Girl on her right said fourteen years old, but doubtful. On her right, (with curl on shoulder) is Inex [i.e., Inez?] Kennedy, just fourteen. The second girl on her right is probably under fourteen. This is a small mill, running a small force.  Location: Roanoke, Virginia.
