Jo's mother showed me the passport which shows Jo to be 14 years old, but he has no school certificate, although working inside the mine.  Location: Pittston, Pennsylvania.

Some of the younger workers in the Beaumont Mills, Spartenberg [sic], S.C. The youngest boy on the right hand end is Bob Cook, works in spinning room #2. Said he had been working about a year. Began at 35 cents a day now makes 50 cents. Their family bible gave his birth day June 25th, 1901, making him 10 years old. Small boy on left end Emmett Capps been doffing one year. Doesn't seem to be 12 years old. The other boys are questionable.  Location: Spartanburg, [South Carolina]

2:15 P.M. Some of the "crew" at ferry, Jersey City, N.J. On extreme left, Sam, 10 yrs. old - "I've got to support the family," he said. Small boy on right centre his broth[er], William 12 years old. Behind him another brother, 14 years old. This last has trachoma, and was excluded from school because of it. Sam had it recently. Mother wants these children to work because they bother her.
