Mrs. Montemora, Fifty-five years old, is janitress for a large tenement, 133 W. Houston St., (lives Apt. 7) housing 26 families. When not tending the furnace or occupied with other duties for others and her own family, she makes flowers, assisted by her niece Josephine, 12 years old. They both work until 10:00 P.M. frequently. Photo was taken at 2:30 P.M., Feb 2, 1912, a school-day, and their only explanation was, "She just stayed out." Making buds. Several adult men relatives live with them. The flowers bring in only a dollar or two a week.  Location: New York, New York (State)

Civarro family, 2106 Second Avenue, second floor back, working on patriotic flag pins. They get 3 cents a gross for inserting pin and putting onto card. Mrs. Civarro with her three-months-old baby in her arms is working with four children aged 10, 9, 7 and 5, and a younger child that does not work (2 years). They work irregularly (as Mrs. Civarro does the janitor work for the building which is in fair condition, and receives in return only the rent free of three small rooms), and their net income for this work is $2 a week. 8 members of the family sleep in one small inner room. The tenement is not licensed for homework. Baby was a premature child and very small and frail. "It is so skinny." Husband is a laborer.  Location: New York, New York (State) / Lewis W. Hine.

Mrs. Lucy Libertine and family: Johnnie, 4 years old; Mary, 6 years; Millie, 9 [?] years, picking nuts in the basement tenement, 143 Hudson St. Mary was standing in the open mouth of the bag holding the cracked nuts (to be picked), with her dirty street shoes on, and using a huge dirty jackknife. On the right is the cobbler's bench used by shoemaker in this room. They live in dark inner bedrooms, and filth abounds in all the room and in the dark, damp entry. See 2704. Family of Mrs. Mette making flowers in a very dirty tenement, 302 Mott St, top floor. Josephine, 13 yrs. old, helps out side school hours until 9 P.M. sometimes. She is soon to be 14 and expects to go to work in an embroidery factory. Says she worked in that factory all last summer. Nicholas, 6 yrs. old and Johnnie, 8 yrs. Old work some. So does Rosie, 11 yrs. old (not in photo) who has been sick a good deal. All together earn only 40 to 50 cents a day. Baby (20 months old) plays with the flowers, and they expect he can help a little before long. The father drives a coach (or hack) irregularly.  Location: New York, New York (State)

Florence Valentino, 12 yrs. old, and sister Jennie, working on crochet hats in dirty kitchen tenement, 3126 Jerome Ave. (Bronx). They make heavy hats, muffs, scarfs, slippers, etc. Jennie, 15 yrs. old, works in a Tremont Av. factory part of the time. Can make 1Πdozen heavy hats in half a day.
