Soldiers inspecting new trackless tank during demonstration at Fort Myer, Virginia. Tank was manufactured by the Trackless Tank Corporation of New York, and submitted to the Ordnance Department, U.S. Army, for inspection. Preliminary tests indicate that the tank may be adaptable for reconnaissance purposes, possibly replacing scout cars. Tank weighs 10 tons. During initial, brief tests at Fort Knox, Kentucky, it made 45 miles an hour across rough country, with a 37 mm gun and two machine guns mounted in its turret; its designer says it can travel 85 mph on level ground. It is powered by a 250 horsepower diesel engine, and carries 1/2-inch armor. Tentative plans of the Army call for a redesign of the superstructure for better arming of the tank

Michael's job as a vertical turret lathe operator in one of the Midwest's largest medium-tank plants gives him the satisfaction of producing weapons to defeat the Axis. Conversion. Food machinery plant. This turret lathe was purchased second-hand from a nearby shoe factory to speed production on war subcontracts held by a New England plant which formerly turned out cube steak machinery. Edwin Becker is checking on a retooling job in progress which will eventually fit the new lathe to thread three-and-a-quarter-inch hexagonal nuts. Becker is checking the measurements of the tool hole in the turret with those of the specially-built tap which will do the threading. Cube Steak Machine Company, Boston, Massachusetts

Manpower. Americans all. His war job gives Michael Kassalo an extra good appetite. Operating a vertical turret lathe in a Midwest tank plant, Michael is one of many hundreds of first and second-generation Americans whose sole purpose during working hours is to get as many tanks as possible off the lines and ready for shipment to the fighting fronts. Michael's grandparents, with whom he lives, cling to the Slavic language and to many "old country" customs, but Michael and his brothers and sisters are as American as the Smiths and Joneses.
