War workers' ideas. Jury votes on war workers' ideas that save man-hours and critical materials. More than 400,000 suggestions to speed war production have been submitted to suggestion committees in war plants, and the outstanding ones tested and sent through more than 2,000 War Production Drive labor-management committees to the above Board for Individual Awards at War Production Drive headquarters in Washington. All ideas recognized by awards are made available to all American war plants and interested United Nations through the system of plow-back into industry as a further benefit to war production. The Board for Individual Awards, composed of engineers and technical experts who contribute their time to evaluating production ideas, is shown at a Washington session. Left to right: Charles B. Francis, Carnegie, Illinois Steel Corporation; Dr. J.L. Bray, Purdue University; Paul H. Stanley, Pitcairn Auto-Gyro Company; L.A. This vulcanizing unit, largest in the world, was designed for the vulcanizing of giant tires used on earth-moving machinery, but is now helping out the war program by vulcanizing self-sealing gas tanks for the nation's war planes. Send your typewriters to war. At Universal City, California, Maria Montez, glamorous Latin-American movie star, and Gloria Jean, typical of young America in Hollywood, helped collect over one hundred typewriters for the Army, Navy, and Marines. Only machines manufactured since January 1, 1935 were commandeered; no portables were wanted. A telephonic dictation room is being set up whereby busy executives can pick up the telephone, dictate their mail to a centrally located room which insures prompt typing of their letters, and at the same time more correspondence can be handled with lesser number of typewriters

Forty-two keys to victory. This man was once a skilled worker in a typewriter factory. He's still a skilled worker in the same factory, but instead of typewriters he's now assembling war items. Although Army and Navy demands for typewriters are increasing, the manufacute of these machines will have ceased by the end of the year. That's why the government needs your typewriter -- if it's of standard size and a model made no earlier than 1935

Conversion. Electric shaver plant. This worker in a New England plant that normally produces electric dry shavers is now busy turning out spring collets for machine tools to be used in war production. On this Norton type C six-inch semi-automatic cylindrical grinder, he used to turn out rotor shafts for the motor of the shaver. To convert his machine to the larger grinding job, it was necessary only to exchange the normal one-inch vitrified aluminum oxide wheel for a three-inch wheel and to increase the feed of the cooling solution. This worker was used to working to a tolerance of .0002 inches on the motor shafts so he finds it simple to attain the comparatively rough tolerance of .002 inches required on this war work.
