For his valuable contribution to plant efficiency, an employee of the Newark Stove Company, Newark, Ohio, won the Certificate of Individual Merit presented by the war production drive headquarters of the War Production Board (WPB). Mr. Lewis suggested a method of reclaiming worn-out reamers that equal or surpass original reamers, the production of which required 2,000 man hours per month and the use of 1,000 pounds of highspeed bar stock. Shown here are the four simple steps in the use of the new lid and metal band closure which will replace the more familiar zinc mason cap--conserving zinc so vitally needed for direct war materials. The Containers Division of the War Production Board (WPB) is encouraging manufacturers to make many millions of these closures available for this year's canning. Jar at the left, having been sterilized, is ready to be filled. Second jar shows the position of the lid immediately after filling, the rubber gasket is placed in between the lid and the mouth of the jar. Third jar: the metal band is screwed on tightly and then slightly loosened and processing begins. After processing is completed, band is tightened again. Jar at the right shows how the band can be removed when the food has thoroughly cooled and the vacuum will hold the lid tightly in place. A truly all-glass package. To open, insert a knife to break vacuum, and lid lifts off easily

Conservation. Used typewriter campaign. The War Production Board (WPB) has launched a campaign to secure 600,000 used typewriters from business firms and private individuals. These machines are needed by the Army, Navy, Maritime Commission, Board of Economic Warfare, Lend-Lease and other government departments and agencies. Don MacDonald, Washington, D.C. typewriter dealer, affixes a decalcomania on a machine turned in to the government by John Stockham, Washington, D.C. insurance man. This was one of the first typewriters thus enlisted in the war effort. The decalcomania reads: "Property of U.S. Government - severe penalties for unlawful use"
