Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, Long Bridge, Keedysville, Washington County, MD

description

Summary

The B&O Railroad was authorized to abandon the bridge and the portion of the Hagerstown Branch on which the bridge was located in 1978.

Significance: This bridge is one of the longest on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, measuring almost 400 feet in length. It is of the trestle type, with timber supports, and carried the Washington County spur of the B&O over Antietam Creek between Hagerstown and Harpers Ferry. This provided the farmers and manufacturers of Washington County with access to the railroad for transport of their crops and products. It demonstrates a high degree of engineering expertise, and is unique in that it is the only timber trestle bridge in Maryland, and possibly on the eastern U.S.
