Ellsworth Air Force Base, Deep Well Pump House & Tower, Twining Street, Blackhawk, Meade County, SD
Summary
Significance: The Deep Well Pump House and Tower (Building No. 1808) was built in 1953, probably in response to the base's increasing population at the time. It represents Ellsworth's significant growth in both size and function during the Cold War era. Ellsworth, one of the Air Force's bomber bases at that time, served as a repository of a large portion of the nation's nuclear weapons arsenal, and became host to a nuclear missile wing.
