Summary

Significance: Designed to house two captains' families, this residence was identical to a second that was removed in 1956 to make way for the Air Defense radar antennae installation on Washington Avenue. Completed May 31, 1904, from QMGO Plan No. 142 Rev. Original cost: $16,262. Dimensions of main body: 62' x 32', rear kitchen wings: 20' x 20'. Two and one-half story plus basement duplex of frame construction on sandstone and brick foundation. Lapped cedar siding. Asphalt shingles replaced original slate shingles on a T-shaped gable roof. Two central chimneys serve four major interior fireplaces. Two-over-two, double-hung sash, with "Palladian" and elliptical windows in attic. Two separate front to side porches with seamed metal roofing. Mirror image interior with side hall plan. Decorative tiled fireplace with oak mantle pieces in living, dining, and upstairs bedrooms. Built-in sideboard at rear of dining room. Panelled sliding doors between living and dining rooms. Staircase and woodwork intact. Basement coal chute remains in place. Cast iron porch step railings replaced with wrought iron. Coal-fired boiler for steam heat removed ca. 1941. Electric lights replaced mineral oil lamps ca. 1908. Maple floors installed on first floor in 1937. Kitchen and bath modernized.
