Immanuel Hall, 302 South Grant Street, Hinsdale, Du Page County, IL

description

Summary

Significance: In 1900, German immigrants volunteered their time and effort to build a simple Gothic-style frame church, the Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church, at the corner of Third and Grant Streets. These talented craftsmen, from Hanover province in northwest Germany, were the same men who built most of the village's homes and businesses. The building's size, proportions, and materials beautifully complement its neighborhood setting. The church contains a working pipe organ installed in 1923 to replace the original reed organ. Stained glass windows were added to the church in 1924 as memorials to notable members. Services of the church were given in German up to 1934. In 1964, the congregation erected a new building and sold Immanuel Hall to its national organization. The property was used as a private school and training facility for the next eighteen years...
