John Muir House, Alhambra Boulevard, Martinez, Contra Costa County, CA
Summary
See also HALS CA-132 for additional documentation.
Significance: The house was built in 1882 by Dr. John Theophile Strentzel, outstanding early horticulturist and physician. John Muir, who married Strentzel's daughter, made this his home from 1890 until his death in 1914. Here Muir, naturalist, conservationist and rancher, produced most of his significant published works on the flora and fauna of the west. Later occupied by various owners, the house was kept in reasonably good repair until 1952, but was later vacated and neglected for two years. Purchased in 1955 by Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Sax, the house has been partially repaired and refurnished.
