Kearns Block, 15-17 Bridge Street, Manchester, Hillsborough County, NH
Summary
Significance: A 4 story brick structure, was built in 1895 for saloon keeper/restauranteur Patrick Kearns. The building was within walking distance of the mills of the city's major employer, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, the world's largest cotton textile producer in the early 20th century. The brick block replaced a frame structure in which former mill worker Kearns lived and operated a saloon, and was built to combine commercial use of the first story with residential apartments on the three upper stories. It typifies the material success of Kearns and is modestly significant as a common example of mixed-use construction in thriving late 19th century downtown Manchester...
