Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Magazine, California Avenue north of Fourth Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Damage and destruction of many buildings in a 1917 explosion in a black powder magazine resulted in the rather hasty erection of new magazine buildings, of which, A72, A75, A76, and A80 are still remaining. These buildings were built to standard designs newly adopted by the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance prior to the start of World War I. Building A75 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District, having good historical integrity with approximately 80% of the original buildings existing.
