Significance: Rosette Rochon was a wealthy free woman of color born in Mobile, Alabama in 1760. She was the daughter of Pierre Rochon, an early ship builder and planter in Mobile and her mother was a mulatto slave named Marianne, who remained in bondage to Pierre until her death. ... Rosette died in 1863, at the age of 103, leaving behind an estate valued at $100,000.00, which in today's dollars would be approximately one million dollars.
