Olivier Plantation, Plantation Store, LA Highway 83, Lydia, Iberia Parish, LA

description

Summary

2002 Charles E. Peterson Prize, First Place

Significance: Although many plantation stores survive in Louisiana, the Olivier Plantation Store is significant due to several uncommon architectural features. As historians have noted, a basic store typology overwhelmingly dominates the rural Louisiana store. Typically the store is a one story wooden structure composed of a linear plan with the gable ridge running the store's length. The building usually boasts gables at each end or often a false facade. Shed additions frequently appear at the sides or rear. Most of these country oasis welcome customers with a broad front covered porch.
