Planning motor car expedition across Asia. Georges-Marie Haardt of Paris will head a scientific party which will start shortly on an expedition which will cover 13,500 miles in Asia, including previously unexplored sections. Halftrac scout cars. Laying the foundation of another power plant for an Army halftrac scout car. An engine block, already fitted with studs and bearing caps, starts its journey down the assembly line of a large Ohio plant. It will come off that line as part of a powerful, dependable engine, ready to take its place in the chassis that will be waiting for it. White Motor Company, Cleveland, Ohio

Auto conversion to airplane engines. With one hundred percent conversion of this automobile factory to production of airplane engines, the gigantic task of remodelling old machinery, removal of old and installation of new equipment, and extensive rebuilding of the plant itself was formidable--but speedy. Under terms of its contract, production was not scheduled until October, but Herulean efforts of management and labor reduced this to early spring of this year. Carloads of scrap material torn out of the plant are shown here at a siding back of the factory. Chevrolet, Buffalo, New York

Conversion. Pianos to airplane motors. Preparing sharps and flats for a nation of jitterbugs has given way to the preparation of trainer-plane motors for a nation dedicated to victory, in this Chicago factory now converted to war production. Bernice Strutz (left) and Clara Bernas are pictured at their pre-war work of installing regulating screws in a piano keyboard. Today they assemble pneumatic motors for Uncle Sam's trainer planes. Gulbransen Company

Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. A new vessel has just moved off these ways, and the keel is being assembled for yet another in a large Eastern shipyard. The bottom and side shell plating and the inner tank sections are being assembled. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars

Car pooling at Lockheed Vega. Arrangements are made by phone, and Don's car is left at home. The few miles left in those tires of his can be used for emergency, or the car may be put completely out of service for the duration. Here, Don leaves the plant ready for the trip home under new car pooling arrangement

Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. This maze of rolling cranes, at a large Eastern shipyard is a typical scene in many large shipyards at work on ships for Uncle Sam's Navy and merchant fleet. Stocks of material are piled up for the cranes to take to vessels under construction so there is no delay in production while waiting for sections or materials. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars.
