Republic Iron & Steel Company, Youngstown Works, Blooming Mill & Blooming Mill Engines, North of Poland Avenue, Youngstown, Mahoning County, OH
Summary
Significance: The Republic Iron and Steel Company installed a United-Tod twin-tandem compound steam engine and a Mesta-Corliss cross-compound steam engine in its blooming mill building at its Youngstown Works to operate a 40" blooming mill. Typical of steam-powered engines operated in concert with the rolling and shaping of steel in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century steel mills, these engines were among the few survivors in the United States prior to their demolition.
